Human-Centered Systems Thinking

At EMI, Human-Centered Systems Thinking is how we solve big, messy problems that impact people and communities. We bring together empathy, strategy, and collaboration to design solutions that work, not just in theory, but in practice. By combining design thinking, systems thinking, and stakeholder co-creation, we help our partners reimagine programs, policies, and technologies that are rooted in person-centeredness, powered by data, and built for lasting impact.

What is human-centered systems thinking?

Organizations are complex systems comprising people, their relationships, technologies, policies, and environments. These systems are dynamic, adaptive, and often unpredictable, especially when addressing challenges in healthcare, social care integration, or digital transformation.

Human-Centered Systems Thinking (HCST) is EMI’s approach to solving these challenges by combining the strengths of two mindsets:

  • Systems Thinking—helps us understand how parts of a system interact, and where change can have the greatest impact.

  • Human-Centered Design (HCD)—keeps the needs, experiences, and voices of people at the core of every solution.

How do we apply it?

We combine four complementary disciplines to design solutions that are effective, person-centered, and sustainable.

Complex Problem Solving

We unpack complex, multifaceted challenges using structured tools such as root cause analysis, Cynefin® Framework, theory of change, and systems mapping.

Systems Thinking and Analysis

We look and analyze the big picture—how people, policies, data, technology, and institutions interact—to uncover patterns and opportunities for long-term change.

Design Thinking

We use creativity and empathy to design programs, tools, requirements, and services that truly meet people’s needs. Through rapid testing and interaction, we create solutions that are more intuitive, accessible, and user-friendly.

Participatory Co-Design & Stakeholder Engagement

We collaborate with communities, practitioners, policymakers, and partners to co-create solutions that reflect lived experiences and foster trust and ownership across the system.
